Notes Otago Witness , Issue 2471, 24 July 1901, Page 63: Mi«s Flora Anstead, an actress who was a favourite with Tasmanian audiences years ago. has recently been admitted as an inmate of a lunatic asylum on the mainland. Miss Anstead was leading lady for Mr WJ Holloway when Miss Essie Jenyns was a budding artiste. She played the chief feminine role in 'The Two Orphans' at the Theatre Royal, Hobart, when Miss Jenyns enacted her first important part. Otago Witness , Issue 2472, 31 July 1901, Page 57: Article on her current illness and recalling her work. New Zealand Free Lance, Volume II, Issue 63, 14 September 1901, Page 14: Flora Anstead (says Adelaide 'Critic'), who died recently in Melbourne, aged 66, appears to have been a New Zealand native. At all events, she first made her name there, playing juvenile lead in a company which included Mrs Robert Heir, JL Hall, Mr and Mrs. BN Jones, Mr and Mrs Stuart O'Brien, Mr and Mrs W Ryan, Mr and Mrs Walter Hill, JP Hydes, and Chas Herbert. Her great successes were made as Mrs Willoughby in 'The Ticket of Leave Man,' Widow Green, in the 'Love Chase,' and Mistress Malaprop, in 'The Rivals ' Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12419, 5 February 1906, Page 8: (A series entitled 'Players and Singers of the Seventies' by G.R.H.) Still continuing my recollections of the principal members of the stock company supporting Mr Hoskins, the name of Miss Flora Anstead comes prominently to my memory. She was one of the best exponents of the line of business technically known as first old women that I have seen. She was particularly good in the pourtrayal of ladies of an uncertain age and grande dame parts. I remember her being specially successful in such characters as Madame Prudence ('Camille'), Mrs Candour ('School for Scandal'), Lady Sowerby Creamly ('Serious Family'), and the Baroness ('Frou Frou'). Miss Anstead was a wonderfully versatile actress, and could make up with a considerable amount of success for youthful parts.
