Notes His struggle to make films for and about Aboriginal people is documented in his co-authored memoir, Kicking Down the Doors (1996). He was the first Indigenous Australian to work as a director in the mainstream Australian theatre industry and in 1972 was appointed Theatre Consultant for the Aboriginal Arts Board of the inaugural Australia Council for the Arts, headed for the first time by an Indigenous person, the artist Wandjuk Marika.
