Notes Born in London in 1875, came to Australia in 1889, and made her stage debut in 1890 with Brough & Boucicault in Joseph's Sweetheart A Chat with Australia's Youngest and Prettiest Actress (1894) Miss Spong Interviewed (1896) Wikipedia entry (& photo). She is very pretty, has a sweet face, and has an innocent fresh kind of way with her, and fine eyes that appeal to the favour of her audience. (Otago Witness , Issue 2080, 4 January 1894, Page 37) Portrait of Hilda Spong Anecdote:Hilda Spong, when she was playing lead in 'Every woman.' has good reason to remember Christchurch, New Zealand. The company showed in the city during midwinter, and 'Everywoman' was the type of play that called for costumes which were mostly out of sight. There was no heating in the Theatre Royal, and the people were nearly frozen stiff m their dressing-rooms before the curtain went up. Before the first act was over the players' teeth were chattering so much that they lost control of their speech. Ah, yes. The play's the thing. (NZ Truth , Issue 1149, 8 December 1927, Page 2).
