From the program notes - The songs that follow similarly fold deep musical expression into miniature forms. They range from a tender lullaby - composed for a former member of the amateur women's choir that Brahms led in Hamburg - to the intensity of one of the Four Serious Songs, composed at the very end of his life...It's right then, that we return after interval to hear the words 'Blessed are they that mourn'. Brahms German Requiem offers consolation and comfort for the living, an attitude not out of place in the more intimate approach offered by tonight's performance with piano duet, just |
