| Description | A richly colourful event, a series of performances of one of the classic Japanese arts. Performed by fifteen master puppeteers, the programme presents Bunraku-style puppetry. Magnificent costumes and sets and absorbing story-telling.
The Awaji Puppet Theatre originated in 1500 on the island of Awaji in the Bay of Osaka. It was developed by farmers on the island as a form of entertainment and became popular throughout Japan, often being presented at Court to the Emperor. Since 1958 the Awaji Puppet Theatre has toured the Soviet Union, United States, France, Spain and England. |
