The original stories by the Brothers Grimm came from their extensive search and recording of European folk tales, first published in their book Children’s and Household Tales in 1812. Their volumes of stories increased over the years and, along with Hans Christian Andersen, form the backbone of Western children’s literature. The Walt Disney adaptations removed many of the ‘darker’ elements of these ‘cautionary’ tales, but now the popularity of the ‘fantasy’ genre in film and TV over the past 20 years has seen them re-emerge into darker adult viewing. |
