Description A story of courage, endurance, survival and, most importantly, friendship, Lifeboat is based on the true story of Bess Walder and Beth Cummings. Catherine Wheels' award-winning production is a poignant and warmly entertaining child's-eye view of wartime chaos.
Fifteen-year-olds Bess and Beth meet on a ship sailing from Liverpool to Canada, two of 90 evacuees escaping the dangers of war-torn Britain. Four days into the journey their ship is torpedoed and sinks. Clinging on to an upturned lifeboat and each other for 19 long hours, the girls will themselves to stay alive.
Switching between the fantasy world of the girls' imagination and the terrifying reality of being shipwrecked in the freezing ocean, Lifeboat is a moving and uplifting play that resonates equally with adult and young audiences.
