Description Based on ‘The Kreutzer Sonata’ by Beethoven, which gave ruse to a controversial novella by Tolstoy, which in turn inspired a strong quartet of the same name by Leoš Janáček, The Kreutzer is cutting edge theatre of the highest quality.
A tale of the evils of envy and betrayal, and a moralistic rant on the perfidy of women, The Kreutzer centres on a man tormented by a quartet and the haunting presence of his dead wife. Themes of marriage, love, lust and jealousy culminate in what can only be described as a theatrical tour-de-force.
A combination of dance-theatre, live classical music and interactive audio-visual, this extraordinary theatrical work reflects the passions in Tolstoy’s original, which offers “moments of dramatic genius: a wracking vision of marriage, hatred voluptuously fed, rage taken for breakfast” (Elizabeth Hardwick).
The Kreutzer is based on an original idea by Peter Barber.
