| Description |
New Zealand premiere of Christoper Hampton's new play Savages. The incident of a kidnapping of a British diplomat by Brazilian urban guerillas sparks a brilliant, sophisticated but passionate documentary about the slaughter of the Brazilian indians of the upper Amazon - a throbbing play combined with the pageantry and colour of Indian ritual ceremonies.
"The play is based on an incident in the early 1960s which involved the slaughter of the Cintas Tribe on one of their traditional feast days, the Quarup. In one single attack, virtually all members of the tribe were killed by sticks of dynamite dropped from a plane." [Theatre Aotearoa] |
