| Description |
The early part of 1918 was a particularly dark period in Stravinsky's life. Like most of the Russians living in Western Europe, he felt exhilarated by the '17 revolution, but the treaty of Brest Litovsk disgusted and humiliated him. Exposed to a new environment, he was at once both receptive and resolutely himself. The writer Ramuz proposed to write a sort of mimed narrative based on Russian folk tales of the soldier who deserts and sells his soul to the devil. |
