Description Ocean Island Mine (2015) references the experience of colonial phosphate extraction from Ocean Island, Christmas Island (part of the nation of Kiribati), and Nauru (known primarily as a prison island for Australia’s unprocessed asylum seekers). In the solo performance, Taumoepeau silently shovels one thousand kilograms of party ice from one pile to another, forty meters apart. The ice stands in as a metonym for the white phosphate rock that was used as fertilizer for farming in neighboring Western nations.
