Description There is some demon of perversity abroad in New Zealand theatre at the moment: first it persuaded Roger Hall that he was Chekhov; now it seems to have tempted Greg McGee with the illusion that he is Dario Fo. Fo, at any rate, is the acknowledged model for this melange of satire and anarchic farce, though at times McGee seems to be harking back to more atavistic influences, like the Caping Concerts of his Otago youth. … The setting is the NZRU headquarters where rugby boss Cyril Embers and his fellow Councillors have met to decide on their next tour of South Africa. … The trouble with Whitemen is that there's virtually no plot: it's written as a series of interlined revue sktetches of intermittent hilarity: and Danny Vendramini's fatally even-paced and rather leaden direction only emphasises this weakness…. Flashes of McGee's old brilliance get lost in the dreary ruck.
