Paris 1938. The gathering Nazi storm over Europe. A rain storm over the Champs Elysées. A man emerges from a cinema … and shelters from the storm under a large chestnut tree. A fatal mistake. A branch of the tree is broken by the violence of the storm, hits the back of his head and kills him, instantly. A bizarre, death, as unnecessary as the millions which were shortly to follow…. The man who died was a writer, Odon von Horvath… Hampton's play revives the writer, and casts him as 'the poet who has emigrated to America.' There, he gravitates towards Hollywood…. |
