'As a piece of theatre Henry 8 is impressive. It is tight, very focussed and innovative with a strong comand by both actors and directors. Seen as a play about sexual politics and power struggles it has a kind of hypnotic strength, like a colourful but uncomfortable nightmare. Yet I found that without its historical placement, it had the same sort of effect that such a vision might have. Fascinating, but in the end empty'. |
