Description The chorus, that bane of classical productions, was handled in the most original manner; it was wholly male, sparing us the view of the usual sidling squad of vestals, white-shifted, gold-sandalled. The men did not speak their verse, but sang it in most ingenous three-part settings by David Farquhar, and despite the polyphony, there was a strong Gregorian feeling in them; the effect, as the play proceeded, was of a slowly enveloping hypnosis.
