Ward 10 is mercurial, fantastic and surrealistic. The three inmates of the ward, John, Mary and Joseph, are subject to the ministrations of Father and Mother, a couple quite as mad as their charges, and alternatingly indulgent and tyrannical. The night life in the ward takes us through a mixture of dreams and reminiscences. Both the carnal and spiritual implications of conventional sex sterotypes are satirised; much of this is doen in a light-hearted vein, but Mary's thwarted maternal yearnings add a touch of darkness and pathos that lingers longest in the memory. |
