With nearly half its performances cancelled, Dutch Uncle was a not easily explained failure, as one or two audiences seemed genuinely to enjoy it. Any voiced objections were with the play. It is not perhaps, surprising, to find that the first script was used or that, after a similar reception in Britain, the author chose to rewrite a substantial part of it. Certainly, little was identifiably wrong with the production. The set was very good and well utilised, movemebt and pace perfectly satisfactory. … Perhaps the explanation lies no deeper than that Wanganui audiences have finally grown tired of this type of British Comedy. |
