First up was The Proposal, in which Lomov, a hypochondriacal landowner wearing evening dress, knocks on the door of Tchubukov, another landowner, seeking the hand in marriage of his daughter, Natalya. …In The Bear, Smirnov, a middle-aged landowner, visits the home of Popova, a widow still in mourning, seeking payment of a debt for oats and which he insists is needed to pay the interest on a mortgage the next day.
