| Description | One of the world's favourite operas is a drama of full-hearted emotions, patriotism and faith. But at its core is a personal tale - a triangle of love, lust and betrayal formed by three unforgettable characters. In the great title role is renowned New Zealand performer Margaret Medlyn.
The young painter Cavaradossi, lover of fiery prima donna Tosca, shields an escaped patriot and is hurled into Rome's political turmoil amid Napoleon's attempts at conquest. Tosca, too, is drawn into the conflict as the sinister police chief, Scarpia, sees a chance to possess her. She finds the courage to fight back, but then she must try to save Cavaradossi's life. Puccini's music captures every detail of the drama and creates a vocal showcase for the characters with famed arias such as "Vissi d'Arte" and "E Lucevan le Stelle". Music of thrilling intensity heightens the spectacle. This seductive new production of Tosca is what red-blooded Italian opera is all about. The opening nights of Tosca in Wellington and Auckland are gala charity performances. Tickets to these two performances are subject to a $10.00 donation with all proceeds going directly to the Genesis Oncology Trust. |
