David Christie Murray, a popular Victorian novelist was in New Zealand in the 1890s. Chums was written mostly in Gisborne and its first performance was in Auckland, became a hit and had one performance at the Globe Theatre, London, and then ran for twelve months in the English and Scots provinces.
