Oamaru 1913. Small town. Big news. At around 2am on Monday 10 February 1913, two members of the returning 1910 British Antarctic Expedition were rowed ashore from the Terra Nova to Sumpter Wharf, Oamaru. They spent the rest of the night in the house of the Oamaru Harbourmaster, Captain Ramsay, where they were examined by the Port Medical officer, Dr Douglas. In the morning, they cabled their woeful news of the death of Captain Scott and his party to their Christchurch agent, who then sent it on to the Central news Agency in London, which had exclusive contractual rights to the story. … Little is know about what actually happened overnight in the Harbourmaster's house. … The Night Visitors is thus a work of imagination … Almost everything in the play that happens within the Forrest household is plausible, but fictitious. … |
