Love conquers all. Brodie has interpreted the fairy tale as entertaining music theatre, and if this is to your taste you'll delight in its humour, energy and special stage effects. Glittering curtains rise on a steeply raked stage, stylised trees framing the sleeping hero Prince Tamino, who struggles in tangled sheets as a grotesque serpent emerges suggestively from under his bed. The Three Ladies rescue him from his nightmare and with vulgar lasciviousness immediately establish the production's intentions to play for laughs …. |
