Hector Berlioz’s fantastical metaphysical drama La Damnation de Faust is neither opera, nor oratorio, nor song cycle nor symphony. Instead it thrives in the theatre of the imagination, creating a magical world of dancing sylphs and demonic devils in technicolour musical detail.
