Description With an astonishing vocabularly of movement Meryl Tankard has created a visionary form of dance theatre that has placed her at the forefront of dance in Australia and resulted in accolades around the world. Her work, profoundly influenced by German choreographer Pina Bausch with whom she worked as leading dancer, marries irony, humour, athletic drama, aesthetic beauty, rich ambiguity and a fundamental sense of humanity. All contribute to the world of an artist at the height of her powers.
Acclaimed as her finest work and decorated with numerous awards, Two Feet contrasts the lives of two very different dancers; Russian ballerina Olga Spessivtzeva, whose obsessive genius ultimately drove her to a lunatic asylum, and the boisterous Mepsie, an aspiring young dancer. The intensity and commitment to the demands of classical ballet are achingly portrayed through both characters.
Olga's final dance on a stage flooded with water and strewn with roses creates one of the most powerful theatrical moments imaginable.
"Bold, theatrically vivid imagination and irrepressible humour... Two Feet is an extraordinary work by an artist of exceptional talent." - Sydney Morning Herald.
