Description One of the happiest inventions of Richard Strauss and his librettist, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Ariadne Auf Naxos is a part-comic, part serious Opera which involves characters from Greek mythology, with clowns from Commedia dell' Arte in a combined performance of great beauty, dexterity and wit. The two elements mingle, disperse and mingle again in an elegant caprice. And, happily, it is left to Comedy to have the final word.
The action takes place in the garden of a rich patron of the arts in 18th century Vienna.
