Description Premiered in Venice in 1642, Monteverdi's great work is set in ancient Rome. Poppea, Nero's mistress, brings about the banishment of the Empress Occtavia and takes the throne herself. This production employes Raymond Leppard's reconstruction of the score first presented at Glyndebourne in 1962.
