Augustus Harris, manager of the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, died suddenly in 1896, leaving the London theatre without its autumn spectacular melodrama. The Duchess of Coolgardie was hurriedly devised, with the backing of Perth millionaire, Herbert Love. |
