Description | Hypatia, a Greek astronomer, mathematician and philosopher, was one of the first mathematicians of the cosmos. Her brutal murder by Christian fanatics in 415 AD is regarded by many as symbolising the end of the classical era. Hypatia existed in a world where women were generally not respected as intellectuals. Maths in particular was seen as a masculine art. Indeed much of her renown was due to her legendary beauty rather than her intelligence. Griffiths plays a woman mathematician, battling the same prejudices as Hypatia, embroiled in multiple layers of conflict against her male count |
