George Leavis Allan was born in London and worked for the Ordanance Department until he decided to move to Australia. He arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and went to the goldfields. After small sucsesses on the goldfields, he opened singing classes in the Hullah method and was appointed singing master in the chief denominational schools by Lieut-Governor Latrobe. He was involved in the formation of the Melbourne Philharmonic Society, was a partner then owner of Alan and Co music warehouse and brought musicians to Australia to perform. He died in St kilda on April 1st 1897. |
