Domestic Intelligence, The Theatre [King Lear] |
| Abstract/Description |
The Sydney Corps Dramatique attempted to perform Shakspeare's tragedy of King Lear, for the benefit of Mr. Simes, on Monday evening last. Let them not be offended at the word attempted-for who can perform the play of Lear? ... The reason why some of these mummeries occur on benefit nights is, that the performers seem to think it a duty incumbent upon them to get up new pieces for these occasions; and it is impossible that they can be correctly represented in such a hurry. After some minor intermediate entertainments -of which Lee's personation of Ancient Statues deserves very favourable notice-the amusing farce of No Song No Supper sent the audience away in good humour. The house was tolerably well filled. |
