Diagrams of influence: A model for charting artistic lineages |

| Abstract/Description |
For most performing artists, their creative practice is not so much a new invention as the sum of a myriad of interwoven influences gained from diverse encounters. Reflecting on my own experience of thirty years in the Australian performing arts, however, I recognise that there can be, in both the profession and in training institutions, a 'denial of influence'. This article proposes that it is both ethical and elucidating to locate one's practice within the context of other practitioners and as part of a continuous, yet changing, art form. I offer a diagrammatic way to understand and chart one's primary artistic influences and lineages.
