Nights Off [The Hairy Ape] |
| Abstract/Description |
Playbox theatres are general everywhere but in the Commonwealth, and now Mr. Duncan Macdougall, late of the Barn Theatre, New York, has brought Australia in to line. Laboring under all the difficulties that beset upheavals, he produced 'The Hairy Ape' at St. James' Hall last Monday. The scenery—such as it was; and the stage — players had only tried out an hour before the curtain rose. The electric lights fused, except one overhead light, which had to serve all purposes, helped by hastily-equipped
colored spots at the back of the gallery. The production was primitive; but, to the forceful intelligence, more effective than the elaborated mechanism to which the commercial theatre
has accustomed us. |
