Notes 'The celebrated Tragedian' (West Coast Times , Issue 1404, 26 March 1870, Page 3). Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12455, 19 March 1906, Page 8. (From a series 'Players and Singers of the Seventies' by G.R.H.): Mr Joseph Rayner, a very clever star actor of heavy parts, was one of those introduced to Christchurch playgoers under the stock company system. He appeared in 1873 at the Theatre, opening in the part of Hamlet. His performance was one of sterling merit, though perhaps in these days it would be regarded as somewhat too energetic. The actors in the times I am speaking of were, it must be admitted, rather stagey at times. He was well supported by the stock company, and especially notable amongst his performances was that of Quasimodo in 'Esmeralda.' a dramatic adaptation of 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame.' His Othello was also an excellent impersonation.
