Notes Press, Volume LXII, Issue 12455, 19 March 1906, Page 8. (From a series 'Players and Singers of the Seventies' by G.R.H.): Towards the end of 1875 a notable dramatic event occurred. This was the appearance of Mr Charles Wheatleigh, an American actor, as Conn in 'The Shaughraun.' Mr Wheatleigh was, without exception, the best impersonator of Irish parts ever seen on our stage, though we have had some very good ones. His Conn was specially noticeable for its wonderful fidelity to life. The stage Irishman, as played by some actors, is quite unnatural, but Mr Wheatleigh made his parts so true to life that his performance lost all semblance of acting. His other Irish parts were Myles na Coppaleen in 'The Colleen Bawn' and Shaun the Post in 'Arrah na Pogue.' In quite a different line of acting Mr Wheatleigh was equally good, notably as Edmond Dantes in 'Monte Christo' and Lord Dundreary in 'Our American Cousin.' The season was a remarkable success, the theatre being filled to overflowing every night.
