Thomas Calcutt arrived in Otago as a second cabin passenger on the Palmyra from London on 19 February 1858. He was an elected committee member of the Otago Building and Land Society in May 1858. In February 1859, he appears in the list of men eligibe to serve as jurors in Otago, and is listed as a printer, living in Dunedin. 19 February 1859, Messrs Chaplin & Calcutt, Maclaggan Street, are offering a desirable freehold property for sale. He appears on the electoral roll of voters on 16 April 1859, listed as a freeholder of Athol-place Dunedin. He also apparently had property in Wakari. He advertised a boat ('the well-known barge Dora') for sale in October 1859. By November 1859, he is advertising as a buyer and seller of sections and properties (town and rural) as a commission agent. By January 1860, still in the same job, he is to be applied to at the Colonist office. He played the pianoforte, and was assisting Miss Redmayne with a concert within two months of his arrival. He also sang at her second concert. |
