Markus Stenz and the Melbourne Symphone commemorate the 100th anniversay of the birth of Kurt Weill with performances of four of his works during the Melbourne Festival. The concert begins with two works by Mozart, a reference to the German classical tradition to which Weill owes so much: an early symphony composed at 19 and the lyrical F major piano concerto, one of the masterpieces he wrote in this form. This concert also recognised the emminance of Geoffrey Lancaster's playing after he was recently awarded first prize in the prestigious 23rd Festival of Flanders International Mozart Fortepiano Competition - the only time first prize has ever been awarded in the history of the competition.
