Since its creation in 1936, the USSR State Symphony Orchestra has been an active exponent of Soviet musical composition giving first performances of works by Miakovsky, Prokofiev, Shaporin, Shostakovich and many others. Renowned throughout the world for its inspired performances, and the number of distinguished Soviet musicians in its ranks, it has been hailed by critics as an orchestra of 106 virtuosi.
