Description A modern-dress production in a blood-red set with floating white panels and a Romanesque double doorway upstage centre. Women play Marcus Antonia, Caesar's strongest supporter, and Casca, one of the conspiring assassins. From the director's note in the programme: We have described Julius Caesar as 'A Play for Our Times'. In the production we have attempted to sharpen the political wisdom already present in the play by setting it in a context closer to our own times. Unlike, say, Romeo and Juliet or Antony and Cleopatra, Julius Caesar is not heavily dependent on gender; political rhetoric and manipulation remain pretty much the same whether practised by a man or a woman or whether taking place in the courts of Queen Elizabeth the First or the corridors of the Beehive…'.
