| Description |
The story of the opera is laid in French Morocco in the year 1925. The native population headed by the Riff tribes of the mountains have risen in revolt against the harsh administration of the French Military Governor General Fontaine. On his death, the Governorship is given to the father of a young French officer who resigned from the French Army to become secret leader of the Riffs and is known throughout the length and breadth of Morocco as the "Red Shadow". Masquerading as a simple-minded youth in the palace of the new Governor General Birabeau he, unbeknowns to his father, carries out the pledge of the Red Shadow to the oppressed native population. |
