New Zealand Herald, 15 March 1869, page 4: 'It is with much regret that we notice in our obituary the death, at the early age of 32 years, of Harriet Gordon, wife of Mr J.P. Hydes. The lady, whose singing has so often delighted us upon the Auckland stage, had been suffering for a long period from a very painful illness. The funeral will take place today.' NZ Herald, 16 March 1869, page 4: 'The funeral of the late Harriet Gordon, wife of Mr. J. P. Hydes, took place yesterday morning, and was attended by most of the members of the theatrical profession in Auckland. The deceased, who was a great favorite with the public, both here and in the Australian colonies, had suffered for a very long period from a most painful complication of disorders. Miss Gordon held a very high position on the colonial stage for many years, and during her early life had earned a high reputation both in London and San Francisco. Her death, at the very early age of 32 years, will be the source of great grief to her many friends and admirers.' Evening Post, 19 March 1869, page 2: 'It is with regret that we (Southern Cross) have to chronicle the death of that well-known lady, Miss Harriett Gordon (Mrs J. P. Hydes), who expired at her residence on Karangahape Road, on the 13th inst. The deceased had been unwell for some months past, and at one time her case waa considered hopeless, but about a fortnight ago she was much better, and it was hoped that she would again charm her many frienda and admirers at no distant date. Last week, however, she suddenly became much worse, and never rallied, expiring as above. Miss Harriet Gordon was well known to the London public, even at the age of nine, as a vocalist and pianist. She earned n great reputation at the Haymarket, under the management of Mr. Buckstone, where she made her first appearance as 'London,' in the Haymarket Spring Meeting; at the Olympic, under Farren's management and at Covent Garden, during James Anderson's management. Her next success was achieved at M 'Guire's Opera House, San Francisco, and she afterwards passed through California, earning laurels throughout her progress. Her career in the colonies is well-known, having held a leading position in the drama. As a burlesque actress she was almost unrivalled. As a vocalist and musician her abilities were second to few, if any, who have ever visited this portion of the colonies, Mrs. Hydes died at the early age of 30 (sic), in the zenith of her powers and abilities, and will be long regretted, not only by the profession, but by her many private friends and admirers.
