W S Lyster died in Melbourne on this day. "In Sydney word of his death arrived only hours before the opening night of an English opera season ... For once the show did not go on. A notice posted on the doors of the Royal conveyed the news to patrons arriving in the evening and 'very general regret was expressed for the loss'." (love, Golden Age of Australian Opera, p.272) |
