Description |
Past representations of Joseph Merrick’s story have all been seen through the framework of Treves’ account. The doctor’s discoveries are applauded and well documented, whilst Merrick’s own experiences are explored with far less complexity. The Real and Imagined History of the Elephant Man attempts to set itself apart from these accounts. By eliminating Treves from the production, Joseph Merrick is placed at the centre of the story. The audience follow his life from early childhood and are given the chance to explore both real and imagined stories from his extraordinary existence. |
